Sierraville Fuels Reduction Project

USFS Community Wildfire Defense Grant

Deadline: April 22, 2024

Project Overview

Firesafe Sierra County (FSSC), consistent with the Sierra County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), Sierra County Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP), and California’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan, proposes to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and improve forest health and resilience through implementation of shaded fuel breaks within and adjacent to the community of Sierraville within Sierra County.

The goal of this project is to increase forest resiliency to wildfire by reducing the horizontal and vertical continuity of fuels thereby improving stand health, vigor, and ability to withstand damaging agents.

This will be accomplished by reducing the number of trees per acre using mechanical treatments on a minimum of 500 acres. The current stocking levels throughout the treatment areas exceed 400 trees per acre, where historical levels on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains were 60-70.

Firesafe Sierra County’s goal is to treat 500 acres adjacent to Sierraville. The RPF will be responsible to conduct site visits on all potential sites, prioritize treatment areas, develop sitespecific prescriptions, submit necessary CEQA documentation, as well as oversee implementation and conduct before and after photo monitoring.

Project funding is provided by a USFS Community Wildfire Defense Grant. As such CEQA is required for all project activities. With your bid please indicate if surveys will be conducted by the RPF or subcontracted by the RPF.
